Viora vs Superwhisper — A Modern macOS Dictation Alternative

Comparing Viora and Superwhisper for macOS voice dictation in 2026. Side-by-side on offline support, pricing, models, and what each one is actually best at.

By the Viora team · Last updated April 27, 2026.

Superwhisper is the reference point for fully-offline voice dictation on the Mac, with a deep model library and a one-time Lifetime price. Viora plays in the same lane on macOS but trades the offline guarantee for an agent mode that can act on what you say. If you're evaluating Superwhisper but want voice that does more than dictate, here is the practical difference.

TL;DR — when to pick which

  • Pick Superwhisper if "no audio ever leaves my Mac" is non-negotiable, you want to choose between local Whisper variants yourself, or you'd rather pay $249.99 once than subscribe.
  • Pick Viora if you want voice to run agent tasks (web search, calendar, third-party connectors) and learn workflows over time, and you're fine with cloud-based transcription.

Where Viora differs in practice

Agent mode, not just dictation

Hold a single key (Fn on Mac keyboards, Ctrl+F on others) and Viora picks one of two paths based on what you're doing:

  1. With nothing selected and no input focused, your sentence is treated as an agent prompt. The Agent Card streams an answer next to the Capsule. Tool calls — web search, calendar lookup via EventKit, third-party connectors via Composio — run inline.
  2. Otherwise Viora behaves like a dictation tool: cleaned-up text drops at the cursor.

Superwhisper's "Super" mode pipes a transcript into a chosen LLM, which is closer to "ask GPT a question with my voice" than to a tool-using agent. There is no equivalent in Superwhisper of triggering, say, an actual calendar event from your spoken request — only of generating a draft of one.

Evolved Skills

When the same kind of agent request comes back enough times, Viora's backend drafts a Skill proposal that you review as a Dream Draft. Approve it once and the next time you describe a similar task, Viora recognises it and runs the saved workflow. Rejected drafts go on a cooldown. Superwhisper's "Modes" are user-authored presets — they don't propose themselves, and they don't compose into multi-step workflows.

The Capsule UI

Viora's Capsule is a corner-docked orb with four states (top-left, top-right, half-hidden left, half-hidden right). It mirrors which side the Agent Card opens on so the answer never opens off-screen. Superwhisper uses a menubar app and a recording HUD — a different visual model, neither better nor worse, just less of a focal point on screen.

Where Superwhisper is stronger

Superwhisper has a clear set of advantages we won't dispute.

  • Truly offline on Apple Silicon. Whisper Ultra, Parakeet, and friends all run on-device. Privacy-sensitive industries can take the "no audio ever leaves your machine" line at face value. Viora cannot make that claim.
  • Lifetime pricing. $249.99 once, vs Viora's $199/year subscription. If you'll use the tool for more than ~16 months, Superwhisper wins on cost.
  • Pick your own model. Six local Whisper variants, Parakeet, two cloud Superwhisper models, and three Deepgram models — paired with the LLM of your choice. Viora gives you a managed pipeline, not a model picker.
  • Cross-platform. Superwhisper now also runs on Windows 10+ and iOS 18+. On Windows it's currently cloud-only for the LLM, but the dictation product is shipping. Viora is macOS-only.
  • Public OpenAPI. If you script your dictation flow, Superwhisper has an API to talk to. Viora doesn't.

Migrating from Superwhisper to Viora

Modes don't transfer. The migration path is short:

  1. Install Viora, pick your hotkey in Settings → Keyboard Shortcuts.
  2. Run a few agent prompts to see whether Viora's intent routing fits the way you actually use voice.
  3. Decide.

If the things you keep wanting voice for are "transcribe and clean up" without any tool use, Superwhisper is a better fit and you should stay. If you find yourself piping transcripts into ChatGPT manually after the fact, Viora collapses both steps into one hotkey — that's the case where switching pays off.

FAQ

Does Viora work offline? No. Transcription and the agent both run against managed cloud services. If offline is a hard requirement, Superwhisper is the better answer.

Does Viora support local Whisper models? No. Viora uses a managed cloud transcription pipeline. There is no local-model option.

Can I bring my own LLM API key (like Superwhisper)? Not today. Viora's agent uses a built-in pipeline.

Is there a Lifetime license for Viora? No. Viora is subscription-based with a free 20,000-word monthly tier. Superwhisper's Lifetime price is one of its best features for users who hate subscriptions.

Does Viora run on Intel Macs? Yes. Both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs are supported.
